Italy increased steel production by 2.1% y/y in September
Time : 2026-10-22
In September this year, steel production in Italy reached 1.9 million tonnes, which is 2.1% higher than the figure for September 2025. Following a year-on-year decline in July (-1.6%) and August (-3.5%), the country’s steel industry has returned to positive growth. This is reported by SteelOrbis, citing data from the Italian Steel Manufacturers’ Federation (Federacciai).
In the period from January to September 2026, total steel output in Italy amounted to 15.9 million tonnes, an increase of 2.4% compared with the same period last year.
In September, the figures for the two main categories of hot-rolled steel showed divergent trends:
1. Long products. Production remained stable compared with last year, totalling 1.2 million tonnes. Between January and September, output of long products reached 9.6 million tonnes, which is 4.7% higher than in the first nine months of 2025.
2. Flat steel products. Output figures have once again turned downwards. In September, production volume stood at 736,000 tonnes, down 17.0% year-on-year. In the first nine months of 2026, flat steel production fell by 4.2% compared with the same period in 2025, totalling 6.5 million tonnes.
By the end of 2025, Italy had increased its steel production by 3.6% compared with 2024 — to 20.7 million tonnes. Production of flat steel products rose by 3.8% last year compared with 2024, reaching 8.9 million tonnes, whilst production of long steel products increased by 5.5% year-on-year, reaching 12.3 million tonnes.
It should be noted that the crisis management team at the steel company Acciaierie d’Italia (ADI) have reached agreements to secure raw materials for their production sites in Genoa, Novi Ligure and Taranto. Under the approved plan, the Genoa Cornigliano plant will receive 35,000 tonnes of coiled steel each month for processing on behalf of third parties, who have acted as guarantors of the supply. Of this volume, 25,000 tonnes will be directed to the galvanising and pickling lines, and 10,000 tonnes to the tinplate production line. This will enable the current workforce in Genoa to be retained until the end of November. Following a brief technical hiatus, production will resume in early January 2027 thanks to supplies from third-party companies. Similar commercial agreements are also planned for the plant in Novi Ligure.
